The vision of a “Common region of best health” has taken shape within the INTERREG 4A project "Cross-border Collaboration on Population Breast Health in South Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein". This mission was the main result of the Final Conference "Cross-border cooperation is the future – Breast Health is an example” on November 24th 2010 at University of Applied Sciences Flensburg, Germany.
After the welcome speech held by the lead partner Prof Dr Roland Trill the political representatives Dr Bettina Bonde, Ministry of Health, Schleswig-Holstein, and Stephanie Lohse, Council of Region Syddanmark, outlined the mutual benefits of the project and its positive impact on cooperation between the neighbour regions.
Keynote speaker Prof Elsbeth Lynge from the Institute of Public Health, Copenhagen University, reported trends in breast cancer incidence and concluded from her findings that breast cancer mortality can be reduced through screening.
Considering this, Prof Dr Ingrid Schreer and Dr Christian Schem from the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein formulated the future possibilities of cross-border research projects including an enhanced usage of the cross-border infrastructure being established during the project for the exchange of screening pictures.
The Danish experts Peder Illum, MedCom, and Claus Duedal Pedersen, Odense University Hospital, presented the technical infrastructure and the results of the pilot run evaluation.
Finally Claus Toftgaard, Region of Southern Denmark, presented the similarities of the regions like treatment programmes, clinicians working – and talking –, and quality indicators on both sides. His conclusion: The project “Cross-border Breath Health” showed that cross-border cooperation is a chance to improve health care. Furthermore; the two regions could form one strong collaborating region in the center of Europe – a “Common region of best health”.
All visions, missions and experiences of the project are condensed in a summary report that was distributed during the final conference. The Danish-German brochure contains also concrete steps to establish a Cross-Border Breast Cancer Center (CBBCC).
